Liposuction makes it possible to permanently remove excess localized fat (steatomeria) which does not vary or only slightly with weight. The principle is to reduce the number of fat cells using suction cannulas with back-and-forth movements. As fat cells do not have the ability to divide, the result is definitive. The remaining fat cells nevertheless retain the ability to vary their volume in the event of a strong variation in weight. Several locations can be treated in the same procedure, but the maximum amount of fat removed in a single session should not exceed 5 to 10% of the patient's weight for reasons of body balance. Liposuction is not a treatment for obesity and should not lead to neglecting healthy living.
