Also called: Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair. Treatment with the MitraClip device aims to decrease mitral regurgitation and improve patients' quality of life. Currently, the gold standard for correcting a large mitral valve leak is open heart surgery. This surgical intervention aims either to replace the mitral valve with an artificial valve (valve replacement) or to repair the damaged valve (valve repair). In either case, open-heart valve intervention is the proven technique to effectively correct severe mitral regurgitation, but it is not suitable for all patients. Implantation of a MitraClip device, which is performed using a catheter, is a minimally invasive procedure that takes place in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. This procedure is being considered for patients in whom open heart surgery is too high a risk.
