They are obtained by applying caloric stimulation to the skin using a laser. The sensation felt is that of a hot sting, so it is a little unpleasant but very bearable, the number of stimulations being limited. The duration of the examination varies from one to two hours depending on the number of skin areas stimulated. They study how the thermal sensitivity and pain pathways work. These ELPs are only carried out in a few centers. They make it possible to better understand the cause of the pain when it is related to a suffering of the nervous system. They have no indication in non-neurological pain.
