Botulinum toxin is used in the treatment of neurological diseases characterized by muscle hypertonia (too much muscle tone) or by exaggerated or abnormal muscle contractions (eg dystonia). Treatment involves injecting small amounts of botulinum toxin into affected muscles. Botulinum toxin induces weakness in the injected hyperactive muscles, without affecting their normal functioning.
