Neuromuscular biopsy

Neurologist

A nerve biopsy involves taking part of a nerve to analyze it under a microscope and try to find the cause of the disease, which may allow appropriate treatment to be offered. A nerve biopsy is an invasive examination that is not performed routinely in neuropathy. The neurologist most often requests this sample to explore certain disabling and / or progressive polyneuropathies whose etiology remains undetermined despite an exhaustive assessment (ENMG, biological samples, lumbar punctures, etc.). The biopsy can then allow him to better understand the mechanisms at the origin of this peripheral nerve damage, to measure its severity and especially to find the cause and possibly the treatment.
