Excision of an epileptogenic region

Neurosurgeon

Surgery is only for the very small fraction of epilepsies that are not controlled by medical treatment. Some interventions aim to eliminate seizures or at least to reduce their number sufficiently to obtain a significant benefit, improve patients' comfort of life and allow the best possible socio-professional integration. These interventions are aimed at certain forms of partial epilepsies. A first surgical modality is limited to the excision of the lesion responsible for epilepsy when this lesion is identified ("lesionectomy"). But most often the removal of the epileptic focus itself (cortectomy) is necessary.
