Pituitary adenoma surgery

Neurosurgeon

Pituitary adenomas are benign tumors originating in the pituitary gland. Their treatment is sometimes complex, but the outcome is good in the vast majority of cases. When faced with a set of endocrine and \ or neurological and \ or ophthalmological symptoms, your doctor will order a brain MRI which will confirm the existence of a pituitary lesion; this will result in a consultation with a neurosurgeon or endocrinologist. The neurosurgeon participates in the management of patients with pituitary adenomas, including those who only require neuro-radiological monitoring. Pituitary adenoma is a slowly growing benign tumor. Neuro-radiological monitoring therefore makes it possible to estimate the evolutionary curve and thus to pose the operative indication only in the presence of significant tumor growth and before having a significant extension of the adenoma; as complete a resection as possible will then be considered while preserving the physiological endocrine functions of the pituitary gland.
