Pituitary adenomas are benign tumors originating in the pituitary gland. Their treatment is sometimes complex, but the outcome is good in the vast majority of cases.
When faced with a set of endocrine and \ or neurological and \ or ophthalmological symptoms, your doctor will order a brain MRI which will confirm the existence of a pituitary lesion; this will result in a consultation with a neurosurgeon or endocrinologist.
The neurosurgeon participates in the management of patients with pituitary adenomas, including those who only require neuro-radiological monitoring. Pituitary adenoma is a slowly growing benign tumor. Neuro-radiological monitoring therefore makes it possible to estimate the evolutionary curve and thus to pose the operative indication only in the presence of significant tumor growth and before having a significant extension of the adenoma; as complete a resection as possible will then be considered while preserving the physiological endocrine functions of the pituitary gland.
