Surgery for vertebral-medullary malformations (Dysraphism / Spina Bifida)

Neurosurgeon

The term "Spina Bifida" formerly used is gradually tending to be replaced by that of "dysraphism" which includes all forms of this pathology, from the smallest to the most extensive. Dysraphism is linked to incomplete development of the spine leading to a dorsal (posterior) opening of the vertebrae which is associated with more or less severe damage to the spinal cord. There are open dysraphisms, or «spina bifida aperta», devoid of skin coverage (eg: myelomeningocele, myelocele), closed dysraphisms, or «spina bifida occulta», in which the malformation is covered (eg: terminal cone lipoma, dermal sinus, etc.)
