Amniocentesis is an invasive medical procedure used for prenatal diagnosis, in which 20 ml of amniotic fluid is extracted from the amniotic cavity in which the fetus is located. Amniocentesis at the start of pregnancy makes it possible to: perform a karyotype of the fetus in order to detect chromosomal abnormalities (trisomy 21 for example) search for genetic or hereditary abnormalities.
