Conization is performed in case of proven or suspected abnormalities of the cervix called cervical dysplasias.
Cervical dyspalsia is a transformation of cells in the cervix often induced by a virus called Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), which presents a risk factor for transformation to cervical cancer after several years .
Conization has two main purposes:
- Diagnosis: it confirms the exact type of lesion of the cervix and specifies its extent
- Therapeutic: if the ablation is complete during the anatomopathological study of the removed part, the conization is the treatment of the lesion to prevent its progression to cancer. But regular monitoring will be MANDATORY to avoid a recurrence
