Electro-oculography, or EOG, is an examination of the retina that is done when you suspect a malfunction in the macula, the region responsible for color vision. The result is an electro-oculogram. This examination is indicated in addition to others to clarify or confirm a diagnosis. It can be practiced at any age, in the case of various diseases, and in babies when a visual defect is suspected. This test can be used to measure eye movements to analyze the course of sleep. The device detects the electrical potential (a voltage, in fractions of a volt) between the retina and the cornea. The measurement indicates the electrical activity of the resting retina, which exists in the absence of any visual stimulus.
