Ptosis is defined as a fall of the upper eyelid due to varying degrees of impotence of the levator muscle of the upper eyelid. Several mechanisms can be involved: neurogenic (nervous origin), myogenic (due to a muscle deficit), aponeurotic (most often age-related) or mechanical damage (after trauma, for example). Congenital ptosis (present at birth) represents 75% of all ptosis.
