a fully implantable motorized device called Fitbone® was developed by the German company Wittenstein, specializing in precision mechanics (it manufactures certain components for Airbus aircraft). It allows precise control of lengthening, reducing pain and also the rate of complications.
It is implanted percutaneously (small incisions) in the bone to be lengthened and the patient usually leaves the hospital after 2 or 3 days, without a cast or splint. The lengthening is then done gradually (1mm / day) by the patient himself using an external remote control.
