During non-union, a new joint appears between the segments of the fractured bone. Non-union should be distinguished from simple delayed union, for which prolonged immobilization will achieve bone union.
The treatment of hypertrophic and atrophic pseudarthroses is based on the strict immobilization of the fracture site by an intervention and the installation of an osteosynthesis material, as well as by the provision of grafts taken from the patient (autologous grafts) .
To treat septic nonunion a strategy in several stages is adopted: eradication of the infection by excision of the infected tissues and antibiotic therapy, fixation of the fracture site by a stable system (often an external fixator), recovery of the site and the wound by reconstructive surgery techniques (such as local flaps or free flaps), then reconstitution of bone continuity by providing grafts.
