The peritoneum is a membrane that completely lines the walls of the abdomen and the various organs contained in the abdominal cavity. Peritoneal carcinoma results from the development of cancer within this membrane. There are two main types: - Primary peritoneal carcinoma. The peritoneum is the cause of the disease. It is a rare pathology which is represented by mesotheliomas, primary serous carcinomas, desmoplastic tumors and psammocarcinomas). - Secondary peritoneal carcinomatosis. The affected peritoneum is the consequence of a spread of primary cancer. This is most often digestive (colon, rectum, stomach ..), gynecological (ovaries) or appendicular (peritoneal pseudomyxomas) The curative treatment of peritoneal carcinomatosis is based on tumor reduction surgery combined with intraperitoneal chemotherapy (that is, performed directly in the abdomen).
