The removal of all or part of the rectum or proctectomy sometimes addresses benign diseases (polyps, inflammatory diseases, endometriosis) and often cancers. The aim of the operation is to remove the diseased segment of the rectum (most of the time with the most distal part of the colon) while preserving what can be preserved lower down. They consist of removing all or part of the rectum and keeping the anal canal. They end with an anastomosis between the colon and the remaining rectum (connection between colon and the short segment which has been preserved at the bottom).
