There are two ways to stop bleeding in the nasal cavity: by occlusion of the ruptured vessel or by balancing intranasal and intravascular pressures.
* Occlusion of the ruptured vessel can be achieved by:
- a ligature or a clip;
- the formation of a thrombus following cauterization, coagulation or the application of certain chemical or organic substances;
- by the introduction of a wick or an absorbable hemostatic sponge;
- by the direct pressure of a finger, of a balloon or of a wick more or less compacted opposite the bleeding vessel.
* The balancing of intranasal and intravascular pressures occurs by transforming the nasal cavity into a closed vessel by occluding the choana posteriorly and the nasal vestibule anteriorly.
