Total / Partial laryngectomie in Sale

Otolaryngologist (ENT)

Total laryngectomy is the total removal of the larynx (organ of voice and respiration) and part of the lining of the upper digestive tract attached to it (hypopharynx or piriform sinus). Partial laryngectomies are procedures that remove tumors of moderate size that only invade part of the larynx. The remaining larynx will be preserved, even rebuilt, to preserve the 3 functions which are: breathing, swallowing (passage of food) and phonation (voice). The goal of partial laryngectomy is to completely remove a tumor, while retaining enough laryngeal elements to be able to speak, breathe, and eat by natural means again once healing has been obtained. In certain cases, despite a very complete preliminary assessment (endoscopy, radiological assessments), this objective proves to be unfeasible during the operation: the extension of the tumor, observed during the operation, may require a total laryngectomy.
