A tracheostomy is the temporary opening of the cervical trachea, thus connected to the skin, bypassing the upper respiratory tract.
The tracheostomy allows
- urgently treat asphyxia linked to an obstruction of the upper airways that does not give way to medical treatment,
- prepare a surgical procedure on the pharynx or larynx,
- to overcome difficult intubation necessitated by general anesthesia,
- allow prolonged ventilation in the context of intensive care.
