The nipple areola (MAP) or nipple consists of an areola and a nipple. The modifications can be aesthetic or: - Increase in the size of the nipple: The increase in the diameter of the areola can be done by tattooing. In the event of a very small or visually absent nipple, a nipple can be reconstructed by one of the techniques used in breast reconstruction. The reconstructed nipple does not always allow breastfeeding. - Size reduction: The diameter of the areola can be reduced at the cost of an incision all around the areola. This reduction can be isolated or part of a more general change in the shape of the breast (mastopexy, reduction or augmentation mastoplasty, treatment of tuberous breasts). - Treatment of inverted or invaginated nipples: Inverted (or invaginated) nipples correspond to the burial of the nipples, making them invisible. This retraction is usually related to the congenital shortness of the milk ducts through which breast secretions flow during breastfeeding. Due to their shortening, the ducts draw the nipple inward. In some cases, this retraction follows an infection (galactophoritis) or plastic surgery of the breast. - Removal of supernumerary nipples or accessory mammary glands: Supernumerary nipples (hyperthelia or polythelia) or additional breasts (hypermastia or polymastia) are linked to the absence of regression of mammary buds during embryonic life. Indeed, along the milky lines, several buds initially exist and only two should normally remain.
