For the measurement of the maximum inspiratory pressure (PImax, MIP "maximal inspiratory pressure"), the patient will completely empty the air from the lungs and place a mouthpiece in the mouth (closed nostrils) while quickly inspiring as strongly as possible against a valve closed (Müller maneuver) for at least two seconds. For the measurement of the maximum expiratory pressure (PEmax, MEP "maximal expiratory pressure"), conversely, it will take the maximum amount of air in the lungs and exhale sharply and rapidly for at least two seconds (against a closed valve , Valsava maneuver).
