Catheterization of the adrenal veins is sometimes requested as part of the workup for hypertension associated with adrenal disease. It is the responsibility of the specialized teams. This test is only offered when the first tests have shown that the high blood pressure is due to an excessive amount of the hormone aldosterone. Its purpose is to find out which of the two adrenal glands, the right or the left, or both, are responsible for hyperaldosteronism. Venous catheterization will allow blood to be drawn directly from the adrenal glands. The results of the assays are useful in choosing an appropriate treatment: either medication or surgery on an abnormal adrenal gland.
