Tomosynthesis, or digital tomosynthesis, is a high spatial resolution medical imaging modality that allows X-ray tomography to be performed at a limited angle, at dose levels similar to radiography. It is particularly used in breast imaging but it has also been used for various clinical applications, such as vascular imaging, dental imaging, orthopedic imaging, musculoskeletal imaging, or even thoracic imaging. Digital breast tomosynthesis allows greater accuracy in diagnosis compared to conventional mammography. In tomosynthesis, as in conventional mammography, compression is used to improve image quality and reduce the dose of radiation.
