Stomach tumors can be benign (polyps, leiomyoma, etc.), of variable malignancy (stromal tumor, GIST), or malignant (adenocarcinoma).
Two types of gastric excisional surgery (gastrectomy) are commonly performed:
- atypical gastrectomies
- regulated gastrectomies (partial or total) with lymph node dissection
Atypical gastrectomy is reserved for benign tumors. The lesion is resected with a safety margin, and does not interrupt digestive continuity. The procedure is often performed under laparoscopy.
Regulated gastrectomy (partial or total) with lymph node dissection is necessary in cases of stomach cancer. Part or all of the stomach is resected along with all of the lymph nodes draining from the stomach. It is then necessary to restore the continuity of the digestive tract using part of the intestine.
Chemotherapy can precede and follow the procedure.
