Intermittent urinary catheterization, or bladder catheterization, involves temporarily inserting a catheter (hollow tubular device) through the urethra into the bladder, in order to empty the contents of the bladder. Urine is passed either directly in the toilet or collected in a urine collection container or bag. The catheter is removed immediately after emptying the bladder and then discarded. Intermittent catheterization is repeated several times a day, approximately every two hours during the day for complete retentions (on average 5 to 6 times per day), or upon getting up and going to bed for incomplete retentions.
