Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) is an application of magnetic resonance imaging to indirectly visualize brain activity. This is an imaging technique used to study how the brain works. It consists in recording minimal local cerebral hemodynamic variations (variation in blood flow properties) when these areas are stimulated. The location of activated brain areas is based on the BOLD effect (Blood Oxygen Level Dependent), linked to the magnetization of hemoglobin contained in red blood cells. This technique presents no known danger to the health of the subjects.
