Surgeon General

This complex pancreatic procedure is intended for patients with chronic pancreatitis. This disease, the main cause of which is alcohol, causes progressive destruction of the pancreas, which becomes fibrous with calcifications resulting in obstruction and dilation of the pancreatic ducts. The possible consequences are flare-ups of acute pancreatitis, chronic abdominal pain worsened by diet with weight loss and sometimes cholestasis (biliary retention) when the common bile duct is compressed at the head of the pancreas. The operation is aimed at patients weaned from all alcohol consumption whose pain is not relieved by medication, at low operative risk. Patients at risk primarily require endoscopic treatment.
