Proton therapy is a type of charged particle radiation therapy. High energy (charged) proton particles are used rather than x-ray beams. Protons emit a higher dose of radiation but cause less damage to surrounding tissue than conventional external beam radiation therapy since it can be direct them more precisely towards the tumor.
