Respiration-dependent radiotherapy

Radiation Oncologist

This involves taking into account the movements of the breath during irradiation of the thorax or the upper abdomen, for example. There are several solutions:
- ask the patient, who is viewing his breathing on a screen, to block it for a few tens of seconds, at a precise moment of his inspiration;
- let the patient breathe normally and only irradiate the tumor when it presents itself in front of the irradiation beam (this is also called the "gating", from the word "gate", that is to say door in English) ;
- or to follow the movements of the tumor by the irradiation beam itself; we speak of "tracking".
