The Bernstein test (acid infusion test) in Casablanca

Gastroenterologist

The Bernstein test, or acid infusion test, is a test that reproduces pain in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It is indicated in chest pain of esophageal origin.
It is recommended when there is doubt about the origin of chest pain in order to rule out a cardiac cause, particularly in the case of a possible angina syndrome.
It is performed by alternately infusing Isotonia saline and hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution through the esophagus through a nasogastric tube. The test will be negative in people without GERD but may be false negative, especially in patients undergoing treatment.
