Motor evoked potentials

Neurologist

They are obtained by stimulating the brain (frontal motor cortex) thanks to a magnetic coil placed on the head. Muscle response is recorded using electrodes positioned on the hand or leg. This exam lasts about half an hour and is not painful. The PEMs study the functioning of the driving track. The contraindications are similar to those of MRI: ferromagnetic materials in the body (especially cochlear implants), cardiac pacemakers. Patients with such material should report it to the doctor before performing the test. Epilepsy and migraine are not real contraindications but it is advisable to report it. PEMs are mainly requested when there is a suspicion of suffering from the spinal cord.
